Oumaro Sissoko Embalo: there will be no “mess” in Guinea-Bissau

The President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Oumaro Sissoko Embalo, responded this Monday to the request of the Madem-G15 party to dissolve the National People’s Assembly, declaring that there will be no “mess” in the country.

When asked by journalists about the position of the Movement for a Democratic Alternative (Madem-G15), to which he belongs, Sissoko replied that this is an issue that “is decided by the people of Madem, it is not a problem for President Madem.” Republic”.

“It’s their problem, but there won’t be any chaos in this country,” the head of state said on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the annual meeting of the audit presidents of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). courts.

The head of state emphasized the importance of holding the annual meeting of the chairmen of the WAEMU courts of audit in Guinea-Bissau and pointed to the presence at the opening as one of the reasons for the postponement of the open presidency announced for this week.

Umaro Sissoko Embalo also said that another reason is that President Erdogan (Turkey) intends to deliver three vessels to Guinea-Bissau this week for maritime inspection.

“Therefore, I will not be able to begin the open presidency this week, but I will announce the date soon,” he said, clarifying that the initiative will serve to “sit with famous people from the communities visited, listen to them.” , this is not to hold a rally.”

Guinean political life has been marred in recent days by institutional confrontation, which began with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Guinea-Bissau’s independence, celebrated on September 23 and 24 by the National People’s Assembly in the Boé forests. , to remember the symbolic place where the nation-state was born.

The President of the Republic considered the celebrations a party manifestation, referring to the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde) and announced the date of the next presidential elections in two years – November 24. , 2025, declaring that he would reapply and declaring himself the winner.

In response, the President of the National People’s Assembly and PAIGC, Domingos Simões Pereira, considered the address of the head of state (to the party) “inadequate and unacceptable”, and considerations regarding the date of the elections and the fact that there is already an early and first round winner.

Madem-G15 demanded the resignation of the President of the Assembly and justified its position by claiming that Domingos Simões Pereira did not respect parliamentary regulations in organizing the celebrations.

The parliamentary group of Guinea-Bissau’s government coalition Plataforma Aliança Inclusiva (PAI)-Terra Ranka accused the main opposition party of fabricating a crisis to dissolve the assembly elected four months ago.

The CSO has also responded to the controversy and “strongly calls upon holders of sovereign powers to refrain from conduct that may jeopardize peace, the stability of government and the popular will as unequivocally expressed therein.”
