At least 11 people were injured on Sunday in clashes between supporters of Frelimo (in power) and Renamo (the largest opposition party) in Nacala Porto in northern Mozambique at the end of campaigning for local elections, it was announced this Monday.
“What happened yesterday [domingo] it was actually a lack of tolerance on the part of some political parties,” explained Etelvina Fevereiro, district administrator of Nacala Porto, the second largest city in Nampula province.
According to the official, the “clashes” occurred late in the day, after the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, left the city where he was visiting and forced the police to resort to the use of tear gas to “disperse” people involved in the conflict.”
