Former infrastructure minister Pedro Nuno Santos on Monday denied that he currently has any intentions of running for the PS leadership or the government, arguing that the prime minister should be the party’s secretary general.
“This role is not in my head right now,” Pedro Nuno Santos said in his debut comments on the evening edition of SIC-Notícias, when asked about the possibility of running for the post of PS leader.
The former minister of infrastructure, who resigned following controversy over the 500 thousand euro compensation paid to former TAP administrator Alexandra Reis, justified his space for comment on the desire to continue his political intervention.
Pedro Nuno Santos said he would “intervene in politics in every possible way”, even comparing himself to historical socialists Mario Soares and Manuel Alegre, as well as his bench colleagues Sergio Sousa Pinto and Alexandra Leitão, who always refused to use their seats for comments as representatives of the party.
“I will not be in opposition to the government, but I will not be its representative,” the former government member assured, setting up his space for comments. Pedro Nuno Santos also rejected the possibility of running for the European Parliament in 2024: “It doesn’t make any sense, I have no desire, no ambition, no taste…”
Regarding the “More Housing” package presented by his former Secretary of State and current Minister Marina Gonçalves, he believes that “it complements what the government has already adopted since 2015 and goes in the right direction.”
