Braga, Viana do Castelo and Porto: dozens of incidents due to heavy rain

The Viana do Castelo and Braga districts, as well as the capital’s Porto area, have seen dozens of incidents due to heavy rain since Friday evening, a civil protection source told Lusa.

In an assessment carried out at 21:45, a source from the national command of the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) said there were 48 active incidents at that time, 22 of which occurred in the Kavado sub-region and 16 in the Kavado sub-region. in Alto Minho.

He added that the Porto metropolitan area also recorded eight incidents in the municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia, Valongo and Maya.

The same source stressed that the incidents mainly involved flooding on public roads and in some houses, with no reports of casualties or structural damage.

There have also been excavation incidents in the same regions over the past few hours.

Between 19:15 and 22:00 in the Braga district, at least 16 incidents were recorded in the municipality of Vila Verde, 15 in the municipality of Braga, 11 in the municipality of Barcelos and eight in the municipality of Amares. This is evidenced by data on the ANEPC website, which Lusa consulted.

In Viana do Castelo district, the municipality of Ponte de Lima recorded at least 25 incidents during the same period, while the municipality of Viana do Castelo recorded three incidents.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange alert for the areas of Porto, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo and Braga until 00:00 Saturday due to “heavy rain and thunderstorms”.

Fifteen districts – Viseu, Évora, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarem, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga – are on a yellow alert for rain , which is valid until the end of the hour 00.

The areas of Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga are also under yellow alert until 3am Saturday due to “frequent and scattered” thunderstorms, IPMA said.

The orange warning is the second-most severe on the scale and is issued in “moderate to high risk weather situations,” according to the IPMA.

According to the IPMA, a yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, is issued whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
