A petition against increasing the MTK for cars until 2007 has already collected 250 thousand signatures

According to the state budget proposal for 2024 (OE 2024) presented last week, the government intends to increase the integrated turnover tax (IUC) for cars registered before 2007 and for motorcycles.

Even before the proposal was presented, after news emerged that the government was considering increasing the IUC, also known as the “vehicle seal”, a public petition was created to stop this increase from happening, and as an alternative it is proposed that electric vehicles start pay IUC based on the power of their engines, eliminating the current exemption.

The authors of the petition, which collected more than 250 thousand signatures in 10 days, argue that “the majority of owners of vehicles registered before July 2007 belong to more economically vulnerable social groups, because if they had better financial conditions, favorable conditions, they could change vehicles regularly.”

The alternative, they argue, is to end the current IUC exemptions that electric vehicles enjoy. And, they add, “andTo a large extent, those who buy electric vehicles are companies and individuals with greater financial resources.”

The proposal would tax electric vehicles IUC based on the power of their engines, while maintaining the additional carbon tax applied to internal combustion engine vehicles.

The petition is available here.
