Bad weather in Madeira causes trees to fall and 44 flights to be canceled

Bad weather across the Madeira archipelago on Saturday evening and Sunday morning caused trees and branches to fall in the center of Funchal, but there were no reports of injuries.

According to a source from the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters, “soldiers of peace” were called to several incidents after the depression that crossed the region on Saturday, most of which involved fallen branches on public roads, but also trees, some of which were large, making some roads impassable.

“However, no casualties have been reported,” emphasizes the same source, who also reports collapsed signs and markers, minor flooding of public roads and damage to a bus stop.

Funchal City Council staff were also clearing roads this Sunday morning due to debris brought by the strong winds felt this weekend in Madeira, with gusts reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) issued an orange warning for the northern coast of Madeira and the island of Porto Santo due to rough seas that ended at 12 noon this Sunday, leaving only a yellow warning for the rest of the day. to 9:00 pm this Sunday due to a northerly swell that could reach five metres.

The strong winds recorded in Madeira on Saturday also caused the cancellation of 44 flights to and from the archipelago (23 arrivals and 21 departures), affecting around seven thousand passengers, many of whom had already been redirected to flights this Sunday.
