Sanctions for non-compliance with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act take effect next year, according to an executive order signed by US President Joe Biden on September 29.
US sanctions in the three territories cover “non-humanitarian and non-trade related assistance,” and in the case of Macau, US authorities also do not allow funding for participation in educational and cultural exchange programs unless it contributes to the fight against human trafficking or is in the US national interest. .
