Portugal administered more than 2.8 million flu and Covid-19 vaccines last month, with flu vaccines recording the highest demand, according to an official bulletin published on Tuesday.
According to official data from the Weekly Seasonal Influenza and Covid-19 Vaccination Report, 259,988 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 last week, for a total of 1,010,615 vaccines administered since September 29 and 341,155 flu vaccines, an increase a total of 1,271,728 vaccines have been administered.
In both cases, pharmacies are responsible for the majority of vaccines administered.
Influenza vaccination coverage is more than 40% among people over 70 years of age and 47.07% among people over 80 years of age. For Covid-19, vaccination coverage drops to 40% among those over 80 and is 34.3% among those aged 70 to 79. In the 60 to 69 age group, 20.53% of people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 and 24.25% have been vaccinated against influenza.
In terms of vaccinating specific groups, more than 100,000 care home residents have been vaccinated against Covid-19 and more than 110,000 against influenza. Among patients with risk pathologies, 71,110 Covid-19 vaccines and 79,863 influenza vaccines were administered. In prisons, including prisoners and professionals, 1,630 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 and 1,836 against influenza.
In under 60s, about 118,000 were administered against Covid-19 and more than 207,000 against influenza.
The flu vaccination, which is being administered alongside Covid-19 this year, is preferably given in community pharmacies for people over 60 years of age.
The National Health Service (NHS) vaccinates people under 60 years of age with high-risk conditions, pregnant women and health care professionals (public and private) and other health services, students undergoing clinical internships, firefighters involved in the transport of patients and people carers of dependent people, who will be called from the relevant medical centers where they are registered.
Vaccinations are also being carried out in homes, integrated care networks and in prisons by NHS staff.
