PSOE secretary Santos Cerdan met in Brussels on Monday with Catalan independence leader Carles Puigdemont in a sign that an amnesty that would allow socialist leader Pedro Sánchez to be invested as prime minister is imminent. .
Cerdan, “number 3” in the socialist hierarchy and considered Sánchez’s right-hand man in the party, is the first PSOE leader to publicly meet with Puigdemont, who is considered a fugitive by Spanish justice. Symbolic or not, the meeting took place exactly six years after Puigdemont fled to Brussels after an illegal referendum on Catalan independence.
According to the Spanish press, the meeting means that the amnesty agreement for Catalan leaders involved in the independence process is closed and should be announced in the coming days, paving the way for Pedro Sánchez to take office next week.
