A man who was about to be evicted set his house on fire and ran to a psychologist

The 62-year-old man, a tenant in an apartment in Kasem, Sintra, caught fire in his house on the day the landlord and authorities were about to seize it, and fled to the parish council where he saw a psychologist. He was eventually caught when he returned to the scene and called a friend, to whom he confessed his “mistake.” PSP took him to the psychiatric ward of the Santa Maria Hospital, and there he was picked up by PJ, who took him to court. He was placed in preventive custody, the prosecutor’s office announced this yesterday.

The fire, which occurred at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 24, caused no injuries but forced 30 residents to evacuate the building, damaging three homes, common areas and four vehicles. PSP officers arrived at the seizure site when they encountered firefighters.

According to prosecutors, the man lit two flames on clothing in one of the bedrooms and on fabric in the living room. Shortly afterwards he left the residence, closed the door and went to a nearby cafe and then to the parish council. The man will be addicted to alcohol and would have been drinking that day.
