Falling trees, rising rivers, landslides, flooded homes and garages, and flooded streets. These are just some of the consequences of Hurricane Domingos, which hit this Saturday mainly in the north of the country – the vast majority of incidents occurred in Minho. From 00:00 to 18:00, Civil Protection recorded 683 situations; 54.5% involved falling trees.
In the financial district of Amares, the increased flow of the Homem River has left only the roofs of houses (old mills and barns) visible on the banks. Also in Paredes, due to the rise of the Ferreira River, Avenida Joaquim Ribeiro da Mota had to be cut, which was completely flooded. Some nearby roads and a bridge were also closed to traffic as a precaution.
Also in Paredes, but in the parish of Rebordos, some of the roads looked like real rivers. On Rua de Pelame, even houses and garages were flooded after heavy rain. In Guimarães the same scenario. Some residents of Creixomil were able to walk around their house only in galoshes after a sudden rise in the level of the Selho River. “This is the second time this has happened at my grandmother’s house,” says Carmen Cardoso. In Pousada de Saramagos, Famalicão, a wall next to a house collapsed. A large rock fell in Penel and destroyed part of a house.
