This Monday, the Brazilian Armed Forces began securing the main ports and airports in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. This is an emergency measure that will last until May 3, 2024.
The Law and Order Guarantees Decree (GLO), approved last week by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in response to rising insecurity, will be applied at the ports of Itaguaí in Rio de Janeiro and Santos in San Diego. Paulo, as well as at Sao Paulo Garulhos and Galeão airports in Rio de Janeiro.
Lula explained when he authorized the measure that the mechanism was aimed at combating organized crime and would have a monitoring committee formed by the security forces and the ministries of justice and defense.
