This Wednesday, the European Commission recommended that the Council of the European Union (EU) begin accession negotiations for Moldova, considering that the country meets the criteria for ensuring democratic stability and the rule of law.
“The European Commission recommends that the Council begin negotiations on the accession of Moldova,” says a report presented this Wednesday by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels on the progress of EU candidate countries.
“In accordance with the results achieved since June 2022 according to political criteria, within the framework of the nine-step structure, and in addition, the Commission considers that Moldova sufficiently meets the criteria related to the stability of institutions ensuring democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for the protection of minorities,” the European Commission added in the report.
Although Ursula von der Leyen is not in the same situation as Ukraine, she acknowledged that Moldova is “also suffering from the consequences”: “Moldova hosts a large number of refugees from Ukraine and, like Ukraine, has made great efforts to reform , for example, the judiciary, have significantly stepped up their efforts to combat corruption.”
