Afonso Salema will step down as CEO of Start Campus, the accused’s defense announced on Friday. Afonso Salema is one of the defendants in Operation Influencer and has been charged with seven crimes.
For two years he was executive president of the company Start Campus, which is investigating the “data center” project in Sines. He graduated from the Technical Institute with a degree in engineering and worked as an analyst at BES.
When leaving the Central Criminal Court in Lisbon, Afonso Salema’s lawyer justified his resignation “to protect the good name of the company, to protect the workers and the project.”
Pedro Duro also said that regardless of whether Afonso Salema is in preventive detention or not, “there are a number of consequences, including reputational ones, that must be taken care of in order to ensure the future of the company and those who work there.” .
The lawyer also admitted that “it is obvious that the company does not have the best image right now.”
According to Pedro Duro, the interrogation of Pedro Salema is expected to begin this Friday afternoon as the interrogation that began this morning is coming to an end.
Paulo Fariña Alves, a lawyer for Sines-based Start Campus, which is also a defendant in the case, told reporters that the company’s idea is to continue the work it is developing in Portugal.
