Six pickpockets (three men and three women), arrested on the spot while robbing people of the Lisbon PSP, were released by the court without even being questioned. The reason was a strike by employees of the judicial system.
The detainees, aged between 18 and 43, were intercepted by the Joint Forces Anti-Pickpocket (F3C) team, the only one in the PSP system dedicated to combating the phenomenon. The first arrests of two Romanians, aged 37 and 42, took place on Wednesday morning. They opened the bag of a woman who was leaving an appointment at the San Cristovan clinic, near the castle of San Jorge, and took her wallet containing 10 euros and documents. That afternoon, F3C agents arrested a couple, also Romanian, he was 43 and she was 18, caught after stealing the wallet of an American tourist containing documents worth 80 euros and $290.
Late Thursday morning, two women aged 42 and 35, compatriots of the previous detainees, were arrested on Rua Augusta. They stole a wallet from an elderly woman, which contained 17 euros, documents and cards, as well as keys to the victim’s house. A few hours later, the Judicial Campus in Lisbon ordered the release of six detainees. They claimed that due to the judges’ strike it was not possible to conduct interrogations.
