Bishops warn of ‘populist messianism’

The President of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP), D. José Ornelas, warned this Monday of “populist manipulations and messianism that undermine the foundations” of democracy and find “fertile ground” in scenarios like the one the country is going through.

“The crisis that has emerged in recent days within the government has brought new and serious elements of uncertainty and anxiety regarding the future of every person, with the possibility of worsening many situations,” said D. José Ornelas, stressing that “the crisis shows that the gap between rich and poor has increased, the isolation of those who cannot afford the costs of services essential to health and human dignity has increased.”

In his speech at the opening of the CEP plenary assembly in Fátima, D. José Ornelas criticized the “spread of conflicts and wars” and stated that “not everything matters, even in times of war.” He reiterated his “deep, sincere and humble request for forgiveness” to victims of sexual abuse in the Church and said he “remains hopeful that euthanasia legislation can be repealed.”
