Catholics are still prohibited from joining Freemasonry, indicates a response from the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, signed by Cardinal Victor Fernandez on Monday and approved by Pope Francis, reports Vatican News.
“The active membership of a believer in Freemasonry is prohibited due to the incompatibility of Catholic teachings and Freemasonry,” the Vatican explains.
The statement came in response to statements by Julito Cortes, Bishop of Dumanguete in the Philippines, who expressed concern about the growing number of “faithful members of Freemasonry” in his diocese.
The Vatican advises Philippine bishops to conduct a “popular catechesis” to explain the incompatibility of “the Catholic faith and Freemasonry.”
