“Extravaganzas,” Joana Vasconcelos’s largest solo exhibition in Brazil, will be on view from this Thursday at the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba, “a mythical museum of international contemporary art,” the Portuguese artist said.
Vasconcelos, who had already exhibited at the South American giant but had not participated in an exhibition of this magnitude, told Lusa that he was “pleased to be here, in this Oscar Niemeyer Museum, a mythical museum of the international contemporary art scene.”
“This Eye is a mythical space. There is talk in the art world about holding exhibitions in places that are not only super original, but also extremely complex,” he reinforced due to the architectural features, referring to the structure of the museum, popularly called “The Eye.” “due to its architectural form.
Measuring approximately seven meters high and 20 meters long, Miss Dior’s Valkyrie, which combines handwoven wools, fabrics and polyester, suspended on steel cables, is the artist’s most striking work in the exhibition and is the centerpiece of the museum.
“The work fits into the eye in an incredible way, there was no need for any adaptations and it looks great on the eye,” emphasized the Portuguese artist, recalling that “there are actually several works that enter into dialogue with this type. space, because this space itself is also a sculpture.”
“Miss Dior’s Valkyrie” was originally created at the invitation of the high fashion brand Dior for the fashion show in Paris in February, dedicated to the women’s collection for the autumn/winter 2023-2024 season.
Before arriving in Brazil, the work also passed through the Chinese city of Shenzhen and was in Macau until October 8 at the International Art Biennale in the former Portuguese-administered territory.
“Bringing a Dior piece to the Oscar Niemeyer Museum is undoubtedly a unique combination,” emphasized Vasconcelos, also highlighting the fact that this is the first work presented in a museum context.
On the museum’s main ramp, the public is greeted by “Valkyrie of Matarazzo”, a work by the Portuguese artist created in 2014 for the interior of the Matarazzo Hospital Chapel in the Bela Vista district of São Paulo.
The works of the Portuguese artist, which will be on display in Curitiba until May 2024, are also concentrated throughout the museum, where you can see works such as “Pantelmina”, “The Big Boob”, models “Solitario”, “Cantiçais”, “Gate”, “ Wedding Cake”, “Mask” and “Zapato” and others.
Speaking to Lusa, Portuguese Ambassador to Brazil Luis Faro Ramos, who visited the Oscar Niemeyer Museum in Curitiba on Wednesday with the Portuguese artist, stressed that Portugal was “an honor to have an exhibition of this size here.” from an artist of this caliber.”
“There are great hopes from the organization of this exhibition, which, in fact, is at the peak of the work of Joana Vasconcelos, who, if not the most international, is one of the most international of our artists,” the diplomat emphasized.
Regarding the museum of her studio, which she intends to locate in the coastal region of Tagus, between the municipalities of Lisbon and Oeiras, Joana Vasconcelos admitted that she did not have enough time to devote herself to it due to the approximately 45 exhibitions she held this year on three continents.
“This is what I’m going to be doing starting in January,” he stressed, confirming: “This is a project that I really want to implement.”
