PS leadership candidate Daniel Adrian challenged his opponents for the post of party secretary general in a debate this Friday, hoping that José Luis Carneiro and Pedro Nuno Santos will respond to the challenge “with full enthusiasm.”
The challenge was made by Daniel Adrian, leader of the minority line in opposition to Socialist General Secretary António Costa, in letters sent to two other candidates to which Luz’s agency had access.
In recent days, José Luis Carneiro has expressed his readiness to debate the internal campaign for direct elections on December 15th and 16th, but Pedro Nuno Santos has refused, saying that given the proximity of early legislative elections in March the 10th, it will “to make an argument for the right.”
“I want to express my full readiness to participate in the debate that brings together the three candidates for the post of Secretary General and which is promoted either on the initiative of the party and its structures, or on the initiative of the media,” the letter says.
Daniel Adrian is convinced that José Luis Carneiro and Pedro Nuno Santos are ready for a “debate on equal terms,” arguing that this is what “democratic, socialist and republican rules and best practices” require.
The letters begin with a greeting to each of the candidates in the race to succeed António Costa, and express the hope that the internal elections “will take place in an atmosphere of intense, fruitful and elevated debate, with smooth processes and scrupulous respect for democratic rules, so dear principles ” into history” PS.
“We are experiencing a high moment in the internal life of the Socialist Party, under the close surveillance of the country, in circumstances that we did not want and which place great responsibilities and demands on us,” says Daniel Adrian.
Therefore, “it is fundamentally important that we can offer members of our party, as well as the Portuguese, to whom our political actions are ultimately directed, a more detailed explanation of our ideas, proposals and solutions for the Socialist Party and Portugal,” the candidate argues.
Elections for António Costa’s successor as secretary general will take place on December 15 and 16, and the congress will take place on December 5 and 7.
