Portugal, Spain and Morocco have signed an agreement to nominate candidates for the 2030 World Cup.

The football federations of Portugal, Spain and Morocco signed an agreement on Wednesday that formalizes the three countries’ candidacy to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the organizations announced this Thursday.

The agreement “represents a commitment by the three football federations to respect the rules and framework governing the nomination process” and is also a guidance document that offers “guidance on key technical aspects of candidacy, such as promotion criteria and assessment,” it said.

FIFA World Cup 2030, which marks the 100th anniversary of the first championship, is seen by the three federations as an opportunity to “showcase their unique culture to promote greater cooperation between Europe, Africa and the rest of the world, while ensuring the event is sustainable and welcoming to fans of all ages and layers of society.”

The President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes, said that this agreement represents a “landmark moment” for the three federations and football in the three countries, noting that after this signing the bodies will begin work, and assured that the candidacy and the Tournament Plan “will impress football fans around the world “

The leader of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, highlighted the growth of football in his country thanks to the “leadership [rei] Mohammed VI” and said that this will be the first men’s World Cup to be held between continents, as well as the first World Cup to be held in Morocco and Portugal, with Spain having already hosted the 1982 World Cup.

The President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Pedro Rocha, thanked FIFA for its trust and emphasized that the three federations “are aware of the enormous responsibility associated with the organization of the FIFA World Cup.”

On October 4, the FIFA Council unanimously approved the candidacy of Portugal, Spain and Morocco, and the opening game will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay, where the first FIFA World Cup took place.

Paraguay and Argentina will also host the game. The three federations submitted their nominations on October 28 in Rabat (Morocco), and FIFA received a declaration of interest in organizing the competition on the 31st of the same month.
