The disruption of emergency services in several districts is a mystery in many relief operations: the League of Portuguese Firefighters (LBP) warned this Thursday about situations in Santarem, Lisbon and Guarda, where firefighters have to travel 150 kilometers with patients suspected of having ironing disease.
“We cannot risk that a citizen requests an ambulance and there is no one because it is 150 or 200 km away,” said LBP President António Nunez.
“This is unacceptable,” he stressed, explaining that there are situations when fire ambulances drive up to the hospital doors to take patients to other hospitals.
On Thursday, the LBP sent a letter of protest to the Ministry of Health and called for “authoritative negotiations.”
