The Inspectorate General of Medical Activities (IGAS) confirmed the start of a review process to determine “whether the standards applicable to the care of two twin children receiving Zolgensma are being met.” This happened to Brazilian twins who received the drug at Santa Maria Hospital in 2019.
“This verification process is ongoing, during which documentary and witness evidence is being collected. Documentation is being collected, in particular, from healthcare institutions of the National Health Service and the Ministry of Health, as well as medical workers and managers of these individuals. The collection of evidence, which is ongoing, at this stage includes medical professionals, heads of medical institutions, authorities of the Ministry of Health and family members of consumers. It is expected that more documentary and testimonial evidence will be collected from decision makers at various levels who interfered with the access of two children to medical assistance,” said a statement sent by IGAS.
“After this stage of the inspection, a draft report is prepared, which is sent to interested parties and persons to exercise the right to adversarial proceedings,” the regulator reminds.
