A preventive inspection carried out by Escolar Park revealed on Tuesday the presence of legionella bacteria in the showers of the locker rooms at Gondomar High School, the principal said this Wednesday in an email sent to parents to which Lusa had access.
In a message signed by director Lilia Silva, the person in charge says that the presence of “the SPP variant of Legionella, rather than the more serious variant, pneumophila” was detected and that access to the showers was prohibited.
In the same text, the teacher indicates that Parque Escolar will “clean and disinfect” the equipment, after which “new analyzes and counter-analyses will be carried out.”
A source from the school told Lusa that “due to ongoing student assessment – first period ends next Friday – the locker rooms were no longer in use and there were no reported cases of anyone falling ill.”
In the note, the school said that “communication with the medical delegation, as well as all disinfection procedures and related counter-analyses, are the responsibility of Parque Escolar.”
In response to Lusa’s report, Park Escolar said two showers were discovered at Gondomar High School on Tuesday that were found to contain Legionella spp bacteria.
“As part of the preventive maintenance and conservation plan at the Escola Secundária de Gondomar, samples were taken and the presence of Legionella SPP bacteria was recorded in the shower of the women’s locker room and in the shower of the men’s locker room.” , emphasizes Parque Escolar.
In an email sent to the parents’ association, ESG director Lilia Silva said a preventive inspection carried out by technicians at Escolar Park found the presence “in the shower” of a “SPP variant of Legionella.” rather than the more serious one, pneumophila,” and that access to showers was prohibited.
The response also notes that “measures were immediately initiated to isolate the premises (including closing the locker rooms), the school management was informed, a chemical shock was carried out, and cleaning and disinfection were carried out with an appropriate chemical.”
The response further states that the matter has been referred “to the local health department” and that “new samples will be collected for counter-analysis and the locker rooms will remain closed until results are available.”
