Japan confirmed this Thursday the first death from mpox (monkeypox), more than a year after the first case of infection was detected in the country.
Japan’s health ministry said the patient was 30 years old, immunocompromised and lived in Saitama Prefecture, an area located between 20 and 30 kilometers north of Tokyo.
The Asia-Pacific country confirmed its first case of smallpox – a disease also known as monkeypox – on July 3, 2022, and had recorded 227 cases by December 3, the Japanese government said.
The disease, first reported in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is characterized by a skin rash that may be accompanied by bouts of fever, sore throat or tender lymph nodes.
In May 2023, the World Health Organization declared the end of the international smallpox outbreak emergency after recording approximately 87,000 infections in 111 countries and 140 deaths.
