This Thursday, the president of the PSD pointed to the situation in education as the best expression of how the PS, PCP and BE are “not even capable of respecting the left”, calling into question the credibility of the socialists who have changed their position regarding the working hours of teachers.
At the PSD parliamentary group’s Christmas dinner, Luis Montenegro focused much of his speech on how the “left” has managed public education over the last eight years of PS rule.
“It was with the PCP, BE and PS, the three great champions of left politics – I say left because they like to say right – that it was these leftists who were responsible for the greatest commitment in our democratic history to private education in Portugal. But private for those who have money,” he criticized.
The PSD chairman said that he is sure that “even the left is ashamed” of this situation and “they no longer see themselves in this PS, this PCP and this BE.”
“Education, like healthcare, is today the greatest expression that PS, BE and PCP are not even able to honor on the left,” he criticized.
However, in this area, Montenegro recalled the PSD proposal presented a few months ago for the full restoration of the frozen working hours of teachers, even when elections had not yet been called.
“We were practically insulted, accused of irresponsibility, unpreparedness, even some demagoguery. It is when the current Minister of Education and two ministers of this government now come to admit that the SDP was right, everything is the opposite of what they said. a few weeks ago,” he said, referring to Socialist Party leadership candidate Pedro Nuno Santos and his supporter Alexandra Leitan.
Montenegro asked whether “these people, this political project have any probability, and immediately gave the answer: “I am convinced that no, we can say that in the case of the PS it will not be “next year.” “In the case of the PS, now is the time to leave,” he said, referring to early legislative elections on March 10.
