Communist renovators ask the left to reach an agreement on re-editing “Geringons” and forming a government

The communist renewalists ask that the left agree to republish the Geringons after the legislative elections and form a coalition government, believing that this is the only way for the country to “restore the momentum of progress.”

“It is important to assume that the future of the country depends on a renewed process of convergence between the left and the center-left, which is now republishing with desired success what was the commitment of 2015,” says the book “From Renewal of Thought to Movement of Political Action”, which will soon be published and dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Renovação Comunista association.

In a conversation with Lusa, the association’s president, Paulo Fidalgo, said that Portugal “needs new governance to renew the momentum of progress, advancement, development and correction of social asymmetries.”

According to the former communist, “the right does not have conditions that guarantee stability” because it is “deeply fragmented and lacks a project,” so “the solution must come from within the left.”

This decision “must come with great importance from the PS, which represents a very significant force, but the PS cannot exclude the rest of the left,” he argued.

The President of the Renovação Comunista believes that the PS, PCP and BE should “resume the negotiation process aimed at establishing specific and quantifiable social and economic goals for the legislature”, and added that if there is a left majority after the legislature, the ideal would be to form a coalition executive made up of members of the three parties.

“I think one of the problems with the ‘invention’ was the weak participation of the BU and the PKP in policy making and in government, and also the lack of participation in the Council of Ministers, because perhaps these agreements were limited solely by the budget, were very limited,” said He.

The President of the Communist Renewal Party acknowledged that the way the left’s convergence ended in 2021 under the leadership of this state budget may represent “a certain trauma” for the re-release of the “invented invention”, but noted that “often events try them first, and then implement it,” given that the left’s 2015 agreement may have been a “first rehearsal.”

Likewise, Paulo Fidalgo believed that the recent disagreements between PCP, BE and PS during the period of the absolute majority – especially regarding issues such as the privatization of TAP or the complete replacement of teachers’ working hours – were not obstacles to the new “gizmo”.

“If it is true that aspects of confrontation and divergence could arise, I think that historical evolutionism is under great pressure from circumstances and will certainly create on March 10 a situation in which the left and center-left forces will be faced with the need to conclude an agreement on the governance of Portugal,” he stressed .

Regarding differences in foreign policy, Paulo Fidalgo also said that they could prove to be “an obstacle and a difficulty”, but there must be management with “sufficient skill” so that there is agreement in certain aspects and not in others.

“The Portuguese communists were part of the NATO government in 1974. Therefore, difficulties in understanding the geopolitical situation should not prevent commitments,” he said.

Paulo Fidalgo noted that so far none of the party leaders of the PKP and BU, nor the candidates for the leadership of the PS have refused to reissue the thing, which shows that they are “very cautious” in the face of the reality that after the elections could impose “agreements and decisions “

“I wish that the Portuguese, if they vote for the left, have a horizon of controllability. (…) The country will not forgive these parties for not understanding the government’s constitution,” he said.
