Colorado Supreme Court bars Donald Trump from running for president for inciting insurrection

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that former President Donald Trump is disqualified from serving as president and barred from the 2024 ballot for inciting insurrection before the 2021 attack on the Capitol, a report said. Reuters.

The court concluded that Trump participated in an insurrection and that the former president’s speech inciting the mob that stormed the Capitol was not protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression, according to court filings.

The lawsuit was brought by a group of Colorado voters with support from the Washington-based group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, which argued that Trump should be disqualified for inciting his supporters to attack the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the transfer of presidential power. for Joe Biden after the 2020 election.

The decision makes Donald Trump the first presidential candidate in US history to be barred from running for the White House under a rarely used provision of the US Constitution that bars officials who have taken part in “insurrection or insurrection” from holding office.
