Around 2,500 people have become homeless in the past three years, according to the coordinator of the National Homeless Integration Strategy (ENIPSSA), who stressed that these have been “particularly challenging” years.
Speaking to Lusa on the day of the publication of the summary of the 2022 study on the characteristics of homeless people, Enrique Joaquim said that between 2020 and 2022 it was possible to exclude “about 2,500 people” from the homeless population.
“Obviously, we are talking about 2020, 2021 and even 2022, especially difficult years due to Covid and after the crisis, inflation,” he emphasized.
He added that there are currently about a thousand places registered, either in housing first or shared housing, with “occupancy rates above 80%” and a further 380 vacancies are expected to be approved soon.
“Since this answer is working, we are talking about 2020, 2021 and 2022, these vacancies have already been filled by more than 850 people,” reported Enrique Joaquim.
He also mentioned that in these three years these responses represent investments of more than 5.5 million euros through the state budget in addition to projects supported by the European Social Fund, which “already has new notifications”. [para concursos] will open in all regions except the north, which will begin in 2024.”
“So that we can continue to increase the number of responses for these people in municipalities, that is, give more consistency to the approach that has been created,” he emphasized.
He also added that since 2020, in collaboration with the Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP), more than 400 people have been employed, and “more than 2 thousand interventions” have been carried out. in the field of training and monitoring.”
The current ENIPSSA ends at the end of 2023 and, according to Enrique Joaquim, the corresponding assessment is being completed, while a new document is being prepared for the next three years (2024-2026), which should go “into public consultation at the beginning of the year.”
Regarding the new document, the ENIPSSA coordinator said that the main novelty lies in working at the prevention level, after a more general assessment has been made and it has been determined what needs to be strengthened and what requires more investment, recognizing that in terms of prevention such “ there has not been a consistent approach yet.
