UNITA promotes the process of resignation of the Angolan President in the Constitutional Court

UNITA announced this Wednesday that it will refer to the Constitutional Court the process of resignation of Angolan President João Lourenço, as well as another against the “illegal vote” in the National Assembly in order to “force” MPLA deputies to respect the Constitution.

This was stated by the leader of the parliamentary group of the largest Angolan opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Liberty Chiaka at a press conference in Luanda.

“The fact that the deputies of the MPLA Parliamentary Group chose to be accomplices to the crimes committed by the President, also violating the oath they took to defend the Constitution, does not mean that the impeachment process has ended (…) Its beginning was simply sabotaged and postponed,” the deputy emphasized.

On October 14, members of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), who constitute the parliamentary majority, stopped the impeachment process presented by UNITA in a stormy plenary session held outside closed rooms, rejecting the creation of a possible commission. .

“They cannot, under the terms of the Constitution, declare that there is no point in removing the president without first analyzing the process where this issue is exhaustively presented and proven,” the leader of the opposition parliament said today.

Liberty Chiaka also summed up the “major contribution of the UNITA parliamentary group to the strengthening of the democratic rule of law,” pointing to the alleged summary executions of citizens, denial of justice, kidnappings, robberies and acts of corruption committed by UNITA agents. State .

“There has also been increasing evidence of acts of active and passive corruption among political officials dependent on the President of the Republic,” said Liberty Chiaka, citing in particular the case of the President of the Supreme Court, Judge Joel Leonardo.

UNITA also identified and reported more than 170 violations of the Public Procurement Law, as well as an “alarming increase” in violations of budget execution rules.

According to Liberty Chiaka, of the 204 existing budgetary units, 141 are not accountable and do not bear political, financial, civil, criminal or disciplinary responsibility.

“The people of Angola have massively rejected the governance of the President of the Republic, a fact that is reflected in the highest disapproval that has ever been observed in peacetime,” the politician concluded, emphasizing that “the general opinion of citizens is that the President of the Republic is in power. He betrayed the oath he took, he has completely lost the confidence of the voters and, therefore, should be removed from office.”
