UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said this Thursday that he is following with concern the development of the current political crisis in Guinea-Bissau.
In a message from the UN Spokesperson released by UN press services, Antonio Guterres calls on all parties to respect the Constitution and engage in constructive dialogue to resolve their political differences.
The note said that the Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, former head of Mozambican diplomacy Leonardo Simão, “is in contact with relevant stakeholders and is ready to engage with the country’s political leadership and other interested parties.”
In the message, Guterres emphasizes cooperation with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other international players.
“News agencies reported that on Wednesday, by decree of Guinean President Oumaro Sissoko Embalo, Prime Minister Geraldo Martins was dismissed a week after his reappointment on December 12,” the press release emphasizes.
The UN adds that Sissoko Embalo dissolved parliament days after what he called a failed Dec. 1 coup, accusing the government of laxity in responding to the clashes.
“Last week, police in Guinea-Bissau used tear gas to disperse some parliamentarians following a decision to dissolve the legislative chamber,” the press release concluded.
