The Ayamonte Civil Guard arrested two Portuguese, a man and a woman, suspected of five crimes of stealing jewelry from residents of Ayamonte in Spain using the method of “hugging the elderly”, the newspaper reported. Huelva Hoy.
The arrest occurred while the couple was driving to the woman’s place of work.
The investigation has been ongoing since September last year following numerous complaints of jewelry being stolen from elderly people. According to the Civil Guard, the crime was always committed in the same way.
“The criminals, usually women, would approach the victims affectionately and tell them that they knew them, and after hugging or kissing them, they would leave the area and get into a car that was always waiting nearby.”
The crime, according to the complaints, was committed by a woman and a middle-aged man who were waiting for her at the car. The police did not intervene earlier because the elderly did not realize the theft until some time after the crime.
In 2018, a Portuguese couple was already detained on suspicion of similar crimes.
The Civil Guard cooperated with the Portuguese authorities and with the Castro Marim Aymonte Police and Customs Cooperation Center (CCPA), which informed the Spanish Civil Guard that the couple’s last registered address would be in Castro Marim in Portugal.
It was also reported that the man died in 2019. It was concluded that the detainee was using different identities. In addition to five offenses of jewel theft, the man is also accused of identity theft and forgery of an official document.
