The National Maritime Authority (NAM) this Saturday appealed to the population not to visit areas prone to rough seas “as the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas.”
“With the advent of the new year, a time when many people head to beaches and coastal areas,” ANM advises “the public to avoid visiting areas prone to sea disturbances, take preventative and safety measures, and avoid unnecessary risks.” “
AMN said in a statement that forecasts indicate a significant increase in seas on the west coast of mainland Portugal, as well as in the Azores and Madeira archipelagos, “very typical of winter seas.”
Given these forecasts, ASM recommends that people always keep “a considerable distance from the water line so as not to be surprised, since the sea can easily reach apparently safe places.”
Therefore, the public should avoid visiting areas exposed to sea disturbances, such as jetties and breakwaters, and should avoid visiting bathhouses by taking preventative and safety measures, he advises.
According to information available on the ASM website, the sea bars of Viana do Castelo and Douro are closed to navigation due to rough seas.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed the areas of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon under a yellow warning level from 6:00 am Sunday until 3:00 am Monday. to the forecast of sea agitation.
IPMA predicts the occurrence of waves from the northwest with a significant height of four to five meters.
According to the institute, New Year’s Eve on the Portuguese mainland should be rainless, with rain returning to the northern and central regions in the first days of 2024.
