Four people were killed and six others seriously injured on Tuesday in a road accident in Nampula, northern Mozambique, caused by the poor condition of the car they were traveling in which overturned, police said.
The accident occurred in the Rapala area and involved a van with 18 passengers, Rosa Chauk, spokesperson for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Nampula, said during a press conference.
“The car’s tires were worn out. The right rear tire blew out and the vehicle then skidded and overturned, killing four people and seriously injuring six others,” the spokeswoman said.
According to Rosa Chauke, the victims were taken to Nampula Central Hospital.
Some organizations rate the level of road traffic accidents in Mozambique as high.
Mozambican authorities have pointed to speeding and drunk driving as the main causes of the accidents.
On average, at least a thousand people die on the country’s roads every year, according to data provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for the Assistance of Road Traffic Victims (Amviro).
