Daesh-linked group claims explosion in Kabul

A group linked to the Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility Wednesday for a van bombing in the Afghan capital that killed at least three people.

The extremist group said in a statement that it detonated an explosive device hidden in a vehicle belonging to staff at Afghanistan’s main prison in Kabul on Tuesday, killing and wounding about 10 people.

Afghan police spokesman Khalid Zadran confirmed the bomb exploded, killing three civilians and injuring four others.

Zadran added that the explosion occurred in the eastern part of the city, in the Alohail area, and that police had detained a suspect.

The Islamic State group’s affiliate in the region has in the past carried out attacks against Shiites, whom IS considers apostates.

In another incident, at least seven civilians were injured this Wednesday after a hand grenade was thrown at a police car in the western city of Herat, the provincial capital of the same name, a spokesman for the local police chief said. Abdullah Ensaf.

Ensaf said no police were injured in the attack, which has not yet been reported.

Over the weekend, IS claimed responsibility for a minibus bombing in western Kabul that killed at least five people.

The IS-linked group has been one of the Taliban’s main rivals since the latter took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US and other troops.

ISIS militants attacked Kabul and northern provinces.
