“This could have happened in any school”: Minister of Education on the death of a student in Seiya

Education Minister João Costa said this Friday that any link between the death of the 17-year-old Escola Secundária de Seia student and the conditions at the institution “is in bad taste.”

“We are talking about an accident that, unfortunately, could have happened in any school or in any place where there is glass. I think any connection between the tragedy and the various conditions in which schools are found is in bad taste.” declared this Friday the Governor, in Covilha, during a visit to the Escola Secundária Campos Melo school, which celebrates its 140th anniversary.

The Minister of Education, during his visit to the Castelo Branco district, expressed condolences to the family and the educational community, said that he was in contact with the school director and reviewed the “tragic, unfortunate situation”, but added that it was not related to the characteristics of the school.

“According to the information I have, this is not related to the specific conditions of the school,” the minister emphasized.

A 17-year-old girl died on Thursday afternoon from serious injuries after colliding with a glass door at the Escola Secundária de Seia school in the Guarda district.

João Costa added that “whenever there is a tragedy, the usual investigation process is carried out” and stressed that, according to the information he had, it was an accident.

“The authorities are investigating. As far as I know, it was an accident,” Joao Costa emphasized.

According to the Minister of Education, in all school intervention projects, “as well as in existing schools”, “the highest conditions of safety are ensured for students and everyone who works in the school.”

According to Seia Volunteer Fire Department Second Chief Marco Teixeira, the alarm was received around 1:48 p.m., and upon arrival, prehospital crews found the student lying on the floor in cardiac arrest and injuries. severe pain in the chest area.

Other relief assets were also deployed at the scene, such as an SIV (immediate life support) ambulance from Seiya and an INEM helicopter that landed on the school grounds.

Marco Teixeira explained that the victim was eventually taken by ambulance to Seia Hospital as part of complex life support maneuvers supported by the INEM helicopter team, but the situation could not be turned around.

A team of INEM psychologists and members of the municipal civil protection service were also mobilized at Seiya Secondary School.

The Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Beiras and Serra da Estrela told Luza that a total of 30 operatives from the Seia Volunteer Fire Service, GNR, INEM and municipal civil protection services were on the scene.
