Odemira reflects on housing, work and immigrant integration

The themes of decent housing, work, reception and integration of immigrants will intersect during a conference on a strategy to solve the problems of the municipality of Odemira in the district of Beja, as announced on Monday.

The conference “Local Proposals for Global Challenges: Housing, Work, Reception and Integration”, organized by the City Council, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday at the headquarters of Sociedade Recreativa S. Teotoniense in São Teotoniou, Odemira.

According to the municipality, the goal of the initiative is to “bring together local, regional and national organizations and academia to discuss and think about a strategy for adapting the territory to current challenges.”

The opening of the conference, scheduled for 2:30 pm on Tuesday, will be curated by Alina Esteves, geographer and assistant professor at the Institute of Geography and Land Management at the University of Lisbon (IGOT-ULisboa).

This is followed by a debate on “Decent Housing/Housing” with Sarah Letras, Delegate of the Public Health Department of Odemira, Eduardo Quinta Nova, Councilor of Sintra, and Antonio Direyto, Head of the Chamber of Innovation and Social Cohesion from Braga.

On Wednesday, at 9:30 am, Mariana Évora’s presentation of the study “Rich and Poor in Southwest Alentejo: Impact of Red Fruit Agricultural Production and Immigration in São Teotónio Parish” is scheduled.

According to the Chamber of Odemira, Deputy Minister and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Ana Catarina Méndez will attend the opening of the conference, while Secretary of State for Housing Fernanda Rodriguez will attend the closing ceremony.

The municipality indicated that it has prepared a paper on what is described as “Odemira’s biggest problem” in partnership with the organizations that make up the Local Commission for Intercultural Engagement.
