The Portuguese Institute of Sports and Youth (IPDJ) ensured on Thursday that the health of athletes was never at risk due to problems with hygiene conditions at the Centro de Alto Rendimento do Jamor (CAR Jamor) in Oeiras.
“As we believe this matter has been disclosed in a disturbing manner, we want to convey all available information in a transparent manner so that there is no doubt. The purpose of this conversation is precisely to inform and ensure that the health of athletes is not at risk at any time. Because,” said Vitor Pataco, president of the IPDJ, quoted in the statement, at a meeting that brought together athletes, parents, guardians and representatives of sports federations with athletes living in CAR Jamor. .
In a document published this Friday, IPDJ explains that the meeting served to clarify recent episodes made public regarding hygienic conditions in the canteen and residence of CAR Jamor, where 70 athletes live.
Vitor Pataco, president of the IPDJ, assured the meeting that four recent episodes calling into question hygiene conditions in space are not related to each other.
“Suspected food poisoning, cockroach discovery, bed bug complaint in room and ASAE inspection. They have only one thing in common: they were concentrated in the same short period, some on the same day,” he assured.
Patako said IPDJ is taking “the situation very seriously, but also as an opportunity to improve reception conditions.”
The meeting, which lasted more than two hours, also included representatives from catering and pest control companies, as well as the presidents of the Olympic and Paralympic Athletes’ Committees.
However, IPDJ assured that it is carrying out “intensified monitoring on the problem of cockroaches and bedbugs,” adding that it has an assurance from the company responsible that “there are no records of pests in the dining and living quarters of CAR Jamor.”
Recently, news reports and reports from athletes and managers have highlighted the lack of conditions and minimum hygiene and sanitation requirements in CAR Jamor canteens, and also mentioned inspections by the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) following a complaint that I was aware of. infestation of cockroaches and bedbugs.
On Sunday, the Portuguese Sports Confederation (CDP) demanded that the government take measures to resolve the situation, considering that “it is completely unacceptable to present this lack of conditions to those who, for the sake of this, raise the name of Portugal to the highest mast.” the world outside.”
