ASAE has confiscated more than seven tons of rice due to labelling violations worth around nine thousand euros during an inspection of around 30 economic operators, as announced this Saturday.
In a statement, the Office of Food and Economic Security (ASAE) said it conducted an inspection through its regional offices targeting businesses selling wholesale food products, both physically and on digital platforms.
During the operation, ASAE verified compliance with the legislation on packaging and labelling requirements for rice and seed rice, inspecting about 30 economic operators.
In actions on Internet platforms aimed at compliance with the standards for the sale of seed rice, a case of administrative offence was initiated against an economic operator who sold unhusked rice of the Teti variety, due to the lack of a license to carry out activities of a rice base producer by providing and commercialising certified species and varieties without complying with the requirements of the law.
It added that about 30 tonnes of unhusked Teti rice were also found and the economic operator was notified that it should refrain from selling any seeds of the aforementioned cereal on the Internet and also withdraw its advertisement for the sale of the seeds.
ASAE also adds that it will continue to develop inspection activities within its mandate throughout the country “in favour of healthy and fair competition between economic operators, in ensuring food safety and the public health of consumers.”
