An Atlas Air Boeing 747-8 caught fire in mid-air and was forced to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport. The plane’s engine failed.
According to FlightAware, quoted by MirrorThe plane took off from the Miami airport at 10:32 p.m., and a few minutes later, at 10:46 p.m., was forced to return to fly over the city after huge sparks flew from the plane.
Eyewitnesses at the airport reported seeing the left wing of the plane on fire.
The incident comes just days after the company said it would increase inspections of 737 Max 9 aircraft after an emergency exit door panel failed on an Alaska Airlines flight.
Atlas Air said in a statement that “the crew followed all standard procedures and returned safely to Miami International Airport. At Atlas, safety is always our top priority and we will conduct a thorough review to determine the cause.”
