Santarem’s civil protection service said it expected “an increase in the flow of the Tagus River downstream of Almurol” today, reflecting discharges from dams, and appealed to the population to take preventive and safety measures.

“Keeping the current situation, and in accordance with the information received from the APA [Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente] and EDP Produção for the Tagus Basin, an increase in the flow of the Tagus River downstream of Almurol is expected today, reflecting the releases that were felt late yesterday and in the early hours of today,” Civil Defense indicates in its report. statement.

The Civil Protection Commission of the District of Santarem activated on Friday at 20:00 the Special Emergency Plan for floods in the Tagus Basin at Blue Alert level due to rising water levels after a meeting to assess the flows and discharges of the dams.

“Tejo flows exceeded 1,500 cubic meters per second (m3/s) in Almurol (Vila Nova da Barquinha) and we had to activate the Plan [Especial de Emergência para Cheias na Bacia do Tejo] much more for prevention and precaution,” said Luse David Lobato, head of the subregional emergency and civil protection department of Médio Tejo.

The decision was made at 20:00, after the forecast values reached the limit for activation of the Special Contingency Plan for Floods in the Tagus Basin (1500 m3/s), with the person in charge realizing that the three dams (Castelo do Bode), Fratel and Pracana), “together they debited 2600 m3/s at 20:00”, causing flooding in some coastal areas and causing the rescue of three shepherds on the banks of the Tagus, in the Alvega region (Abrantes). .

Civil Defense points to “rainfalls felt in Portugal” as well as “discharges from dams and tributaries of the Tagus River basin” as factors that caused “a significant increase in hydrometric indicators and flow levels of the Tagus River and its tributaries.”

Today’s information note notes that the Sorraia River “experienced a significant increase in flow yesterday, with a current decrease in flows from the Maranhão and Furaduru dams” and “a stabilization of the hydrometric height measured at Corus.” .

The Santarem County Civil Protection Office is advising the public and municipal civil protection services and asking the media to “continue to warn the population about self-protection measures in the event of floods.”

Authorities ask the public to remove agricultural and industrial equipment, vehicles and other goods from areas adjacent to watercourses that are usually flooded, move animals to safe places, not cross roads or flooded areas with vehicles or on foot, and those that create the necessary actions for protecting yourself, your family and your property.

According to the sub-regional commands of Lezíria do Tejo and Medio Tejo, which are monitoring the situation, there will be restrictions this Saturday in the municipality of Abrantes, namely on the road from Tramagal to Santa Margarida and in the coastal area of the city. Alwega.
