Sporting won the Futsal League Cup this Sunday, beating Benfica 4-2 in a thrilling game in which the Lions sealed their triumph with three early goals.
Sporting winger Tynan’s brace led Nuno Dias’ side to a strategy-led triumph against a trophy-defending Benfica side who were more explosive but without the same efficiency as their opponents.
Sporting now lead the trophy with five wins, while the Reds have won four in the final of this competition.
Seeking a tie-breaker, the derby turned spicy after just 55 seconds when Sporting’s Tynan decided to end the build-up with a bang after a corner. which opened the account.
Inspired by the opponent’s sudden exit, the “eagles” immediately began trying to get back through Chishkala, who began to make the opposing goalkeeper Enrique shine with a couple of shots.
Sporting, always more calculating, with interesting and practiced futsal, in contrast to the explosive and strong play of the Reds, relied on counterattacks and after eight minutes they reaped the benefits of this strategy.
In a quick attack, Panny Varela made the first shot, which was saved by Leo Guzhel, but did not prevent the cunning Sokolov from making the score 2:0 on the rebound.
With a more pronounced disadvantage, Benfica had to step up their shooting ability, with Catchi, Higor and Diego Nunez standing out, but they proved wasteful in several moments after the end.
Despite this, Luz’s persistence eventually paid off in the 18th minute, taking advantage of one of Sporting’s few lapses in concentration, who lost the ball in two moments and found themselves at the mercy of a play designed by Arthur and finished at 2. -1, from Chishkala.
Afonso Jesus missed the score with a shot wide of goal from a great position soon after, but was eventually punished by the Lions’ coldness in the next game and again after a dead ball in which Tynan scored again. his powerful mid-range strike made it 3-1 at half-time.
After the rest, the tone of the game remained unchanged: Benfica returned with the same shooting ability, forcing goalkeeper Henrique to shine, while Sporting, with their more intelligent strategy of possession and exchange of the ball, also caused problems in attack.
The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute by a coup for Benfica when a corner from Carlos Monteiro was eventually deflected into his own net by Lions captain Joao Matos to make it 3-2. that it renewed the emotions of challenge.
The match then picked up a frantic pace again, with Sporting taking a little more risks to prevent surprises and Benfica taking advantage of the space left by their opponents to intensify their attacks.
The green and whites still had a golden opportunity to take the lead again when Alex Merlin alone failed to overcome the Benfica goalkeeper.
The final moments were marked by controversy that led to Benfica’s fifth foul in the final seconds, giving way to a free kick that Tomas Paso missed to make the final score 4–2.
The game took place in the municipal pavilion of Povoa de Varzim.
