The Alqueva dam on the Guadiana River stored 79 cubic hectometers (hm3) in 24 hours, equivalent to annual urban consumption in the Algarve, a region experiencing water distribution constraints.
On Saturday, the reservoir had 3,223 gm3 of water at a height of 148.05 meters, the next day it reached 3,303 gm3 at a height of 148.45 meters, the Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company (EDIA) said.
The rapid increase in water volume was the result of heavy rainfall caused by the Irene and Juan depressions. The dam has now reached 80% of its maximum capacity, up from 72% six days ago.
Meanwhile, the Spanish government has informed the Portuguese government of its intention to use water from Alqueva to supply the province of Huelva, namely the Doñana Natural Park at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River, Environment Minister Hugo Moran said. in the statement. .
