Women through the eyes of Maria Lamas

An unprecedented exhibition of 67 photographs by Maria Lamas, considered one of the most important Portuguese women of the 20th century, can now be seen at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (until 28 May). “Mary Lama’s Women” presents portraits of women from the countryside, mountains, coast and sea, on the docks, in mines and factories, teachers, nurses, postal workers, maids, maids, single mothers and even prostitutes.

According to Jorge Calado, curator of the exhibition, Maria Lamas, known as a writer and journalist, “fought for the liberation of women not as women, but as citizens and people,” as a champion of human rights and civil rights during the Estado era. New. Maria Lamas’ photographs are being exhibited in Portugal for the first time and this is her first solo exhibition. Maria Lamas died on December 6, 1983 at the age of 90 from a stroke.
