Madeira’s spokesman says he is analyzing the situation because there are unresolved issues, “namely the state budget, if it is approved.”
“I am considering the best time for the law to come into force. It could be this week, or it could be only after the budget is approved. At the moment, the date is open,” he added.
The regional government’s chairman announced on Friday that he would resign two days after he was indicted as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption in Madeira that led to the arrest of Funchal Mayor Pedro Calado (NSD). and two businessmen associated with the construction and tourism sectors.
According to Article 62 of the Political-Administrative Statute of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, the dismissal of the executive involves “the presentation of a request for dismissal by the President of the Regional Government.”
In Madeira, elections for the regional legislature were held on September 24, so a possible presidential dissolution of the republic could only occur after March 24, according to a law that prohibits the dissolution of parliaments within six months of elections.
“I accepted the resignation of the president, but I have not yet resigned,” repeated Ireneu Barreto, emphasizing that Miguel Albuquerque did not give him a name that could replace him in the leadership of the regional government, the SDS/SDS-PP coalition, whose absolute majority is Legislative support for the Assembly is supported by a single PAN MP under a parliamentary protection agreement.
The representative of the republic, on the other hand, clarified that he would only listen to the nine parties represented in the regional parliament – SDP, PS, PNP, Chega, SDS-PP, PKP, IL, BE and PAN – after which the leader was dismissed.
“I’m going to talk to the parties, I’m going to listen to what they tell me. I am open to whatever solution I believe best protects Madeira’s interests,” he said.
However, Ireneu Barreto reiterated that Miguel Albuquerque’s dismissal would not have immediate consequences.
“The President will analyze your situation, I will analyze mine. We will see the interests of the region and then make an appropriate decision,” he explained.
Discussions on the 2024 budget of the autonomous region of Madeira, with a global cost of 2.238 million euros, the largest ever, are scheduled to take place between 6 and 9 February, but there will also be votes of no confidence on 7 February. to the regional government, represented by the PS, Madeira’s largest opposition party, and Chega.
“I am ready for anything, regardless of my interests, that is in the interests of the Autonomous Region of Madeira,” said Miguel Albuquerque at the end of the meeting with the representative of the Republic, also emphasizing the importance of the regional budget for 2024 approved, avoiding the management of twelfths.

Miguel Albuquerque, on the other hand, said that he will remain president of the PSD/Madeira until a new congress, the date of which has not yet been set, but that he will not hold the position of deputy in the Regional Legislative Assembly.
