“Whatever happens next is the government’s fault”: security forces swarm the center of Porto

“Someone tell the Home Secretary that patience has limits” or “whatever happens next, the government is to blame.” These two sentences sum up the dissatisfaction and indignation of thousands of police officers (unions say more than 20 thousand) who this Wednesday filled the streets of Porto in another protest for higher wages and a risk allowance equal to that given to PJ.

We are talking about the news that the government, even before the announced farmers’ protest, opened financial flows and provided the sector with 400 million euros, as well as budget execution data that shows a surplus of four billion in the state treasury. “There is no money just for the police,” shouted thousands of men and women from the PSP, GNR and prison guards. Many are calling for more visible action and other forms of struggle as the protest that began on January 7 has so far had no impact.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Minister of the Interior received the heads of the PSP, PNP and ANEPC at an “internal working meeting”.
