Eurostat estimates the annual inflation rate slowed again to 2.8% in the eurozone in January, down from 2.9% in December 2023, when it broke a seven-month downward trend.
According to data published this Thursday, the average annual inflation rate for eurozone countries was 8.6% in January 2023.
The European Statistical Office also indicates that core inflation (the one that calculates price movements excluding the most volatile elements) slowed to 3.3%, down from 3.4% in December and 5.3% since January 2023.
The food, alcohol and tobacco segment recorded the highest annual inflation rate in January (5.7% compared to 6.1% in December), followed by services (4.0%, stable month-on-month), non-energy industrial goods (2.0%, down from 2.5% in December) and energy (-6.3%, down from -6.7% in the previous month).
Among eurozone countries, Estonia (5.0%) is expected to show the highest annual inflation rate in January, as measured by the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), followed by Croatia (4.8%) and Austria (4.3%).
The lowest inflation rates, in turn, were observed in Finland (0.7%), Italy (0.9%), Latvia and Lithuania (1.0% each).
In Portugal, annual inflation as measured by the HIPC is expected to be 2.3%, down from 1.9% in December and below 8.6%.
