GNR prevents farmers from entering the A23 motorway

Lusa discovered on the spot that the GNR blocked access to Highway 23 (A23) and prevented farmers from Oeste and Ribatejo, who wanted to block traffic, from accessing the road.

According to the Civil Farmers’ Movement, about 800 farmers and 100 tractors, who this Thursday morning took part in a slow march along Ponte da Chamusca in the Santarém area, then decided to head towards the A23 motorway to block the road to traffic.

However, the NTC blocked access to the highway, preventing farmers from blocking the road.

The farmers had reorganized and, they told Lusa, had been divided into two groups that would travel to the A23 in vans using other access roads to block traffic.

In the regions of Ribatejo and Oeste, protest this morning centered on Ponte da Chamusca after two local authorities in the region, Barquinha and Entroncamento, refused to sanction demonstrations in their municipalities.

At the end of the morning, about 800 protesters, accompanied by more than 100 tractors, displayed banners and placards with phrases such as “Our end is your hunger,” “There is no future without farmers,” and “They want to steal my future.” “, they headed towards the A23.

This Thursday, farmers took to the streets with their tractors, from north to south, demanding recognition of the sector and fair conditions, in a protest that is blocking several roads, as has happened in other parts of Europe.

The movement, which describes itself as spontaneous and non-partisan, ensured that Portuguese farmers were ready to “defend themselves against the constant attacks on sustainability, food sovereignty and rural life.”

The A23 – Inland Beira motorway crosses the areas of Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Santarem, connecting Torres Novas with Guarda.
