The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, this Thursday defended changing the law if necessary, given that democracy is not a complete process, in the context of criticism of the organization of the last vote.
“Let’s not be afraid to change the laws that we ourselves, sovereignly, develop. If something is not very well legislated, [que seja alterado] so that the democratic game is as fair, free and transparent as possible,” said Filipe Nyusi during the opening ceremony of the 2024 judicial year in Maputo.
According to the President of Mozambique, 34 years after the adoption of the first multi-party Constitution, he continues to learn the rules of the democratic game, and the alliance of all participants is fundamental in this process.
“We must remain united to overcome the challenges of a process in which we are all students. Correcting what does not contribute to establishing the quality of justice cannot be done through accusations or hatred,” said the Mozambican head of state.
The coordination of the three powers is important for the construction of democracy, noted Filipe Nyusi, emphasizing that this process is never complete.
“We abandon our position to do everything in coordination with the judiciary and the legislature to further improve our legislation,” emphasized leader Filipe Nyusi.
Last year, Mozambique held its sixth municipal elections, with Frelimo in power being declared winner in 60 of the 65 municipalities.
The vote drew strong criticism from the opposition, which did not accept the official results, as well as civil society, which alleged fraud, while the Constitutional Council (CC), the highest body of electoral justice, recognized the need to review the election law, especially to clarify the powers of trial courts .
The country is preparing for general elections this year, including a seventh presidential election in which Mozambique’s current president, Filipe Nyusi, can no longer run under the constitution.
The vote is scheduled for October 9 and will cost about 6.500 million metises (96.3 million euros), according to the allocations included by the government in the draft state budget for 2024.
