Two obstetricians from the Hospital de S. Sebastião and an insurance company have agreed to pay €150,000 compensation to a family in Santa Maria da Feira after medical errors during childbirth led to cerebral palsy in a newborn. According to Newspaperthe child was left with 80% disability.
Maria do Seu was admitted to the Saint Sebastian Hospital in Santa Maria da Feira, and only after almost two days of hospitalization did labor begin using forceps. After four attempts, the medical team switched to cupping (three times). Only then did they decide to do an emergency caesarean section.
At the time of delivery, I had to resort to resuscitation and the newborn was sent to the intensive care unit of the hospital. After further complications, the child was sent to the Saint João hospital in Porto. The medical commission awarded him 80% incapacity for work.
The case took place in 2014, but since medical workers and hospital staff did not allow dishonest actions during childbirth, the family decided to go to court. Already during the trial, two doctors and an insurance company agreed to pay compensation in the amount of 150 thousand euros, and the Administrative Court of Aveiro closed the case.
