This Monday, swimmer Diogo Ribeiro became world champion in the 50m butterfly in Doha, Qatar. With a time of 22.97 seconds, the 19-year-old made history by achieving the best time in Portuguese swimming history.
“I have no words right now,” the Benfica swimmer quickly responded.
The 19-year-old Portuguese, who took second place at the Fukuoka 2023 World Championships at this distance, was ahead of North American Michael Andrew (23.07) and Australian Cameron McAvoy (23.03).
As a reminder, Diogo Ribeiro became the first Portuguese swimmer to qualify for two World Championship finals after winning a silver medal in Fukuoka in 2023 over the same distance, where he also set the current national record of 22.80 seconds.
